Moon and Star - (1874 - 1980s) - The "Moon and Star" design has enchanted collectors for centuries.  This lovely pattern of connecting circles and stars can be found in almost every glass color and as a result fits into almost any decorating scheme.

" Moon and Star" was first introduced as "Palace"  by Adams and Company in 1874.   These early pieces are found in crystal.  The pieces made were heavy and included table ware or kitchen items such as butter dishes, relishes, shakers, candies, and spoon rests.  During the 1890s, The U.S. Glass Company also produced their version of the "Palace" pattern.  The pattern was beautiful but hard to sell because of the size of the pieces.

The years that we are most concerned with start with the 1930s when L.G. Wright obtained some of the older Palace" or " Moon and Star" molds.  L.G. Wright commissioned other glass companies to make his glassware. Wright's inventory was extensive, but he never made any of the glass that he sold.  "Moon and Star was only one of the many patterns Wright reproduced.   Both L.E. Smith and Fenton made "Moon and Star" for L.G. Wright.  L.G. Wright had exclusive rights to many pieces of "Moon and Star"  and sold these items under the L.G. Wright name.  The pattern was named "Moon and Star" with the reintroduction of the pattern in the 1930s.  L.G. Wright used some of the older molds that he obtained from earlier "Palace" productions and had new molds made to offer a wider variety of items. Wright offered this pattern in vaseline,  greens, amber, blues, ruby, amberina, amethyst, and blue opalescent.  L.G. Wright commissioned the production of pieces and sold the "Moon and Star" pattern until the company closed in 1999.

Although L.E. Smith made many "Moon and Star" items for L.G. Wright  in the late 1940s,  they began selling other pieces of the "Moon and Star" pattern in the 1960s under the L.E. Smith name.  The molds that they used to produce these items were produced and owned by The Island Mold Company. L.E. Smith contracted with Joseph Weishar of the Island Mold Company who produced the new "Moon and Star" molds.  L.E. Smith paid a royalty to the mold company for each piece of glass that they produced from these molds. They never purchased the "Moon and Star molds. Many of the pieces that were made from these molds were marked with a "S" for L.E. Smith.  Smith started using this mark sometime in the 1960s.  Smith made "Moon and Star" until 2004.

In the 2000's Fenton produced the " Moon and Star decanter and wine goblets as a part of their regular line.  The decanter mold was the only mold known to have been owned by Fenton.  The Fenton Art Glass Company is still open and is selling their in stock merchandise.  They have recently discontinued production of glassware.  The decanters produced by Fenton are marked with the Fenton Logo.

In the 1980's, Weishar Enterprises began making miniature water sets in the " Moon and Star" pattern.  This company is still making "Moon and Star" and currently owns most of the "Moon and Star" molds .  Many of the pieces made are in new colors that have not been previously made.  The pieces made by Weishar are all signed with a distinct Weisher signature.  This signature allows the older L.G. Wright and Smith pieces to easily be distinguished from newer pieces and thus retain their collectible values. © Margaret and Kenn Whitmyer
