Stonex Knife (1930s)

STONEX INFORMATION INSTRUCTIONSThe Stonex glass knife has been found in fairly large range of colors.  Known colors include, pink, green, amber, opal (fry like), and crystal.  For some reason the colors were not consistent. Pinks range from a very light (almost crystal) color, to a very dark pink with amber hues mixed into the color. Some of the varying colors are so dissimilar in color that they have been named.  For instance, the deep pink color is referred to as pinkish amber by both dealers and collectors. Green and amber can also be found in many different shades or hues. The opal knife has been found in solid white milk glass and with varying shades of opalescence.  Collectors have scrambled for years to add the multitude of varying colors to their collections.  Some of the color variations may be the result of the mold being owned by a distributor rather than a glass manufacturer.  Different glass companies may have been commissioned to make this knife. Mold records obtained by the West Virginia Museum of American Glass from L. J. Houze indicate they won a bid to make this knife and the mold was received by them on May 1, 1940. The mold was owned by Advance Specialty Company.  These knives were sold in boxes that are are labeled with the words "Stonex Glass Knife."  In addition to the  name, the  box top lists the color, the price (which was ("ONE DOLLAR") and the words "STAINLESS. SANITARY. WON'T CRACK IN HOT OR COLD WATER.  STAYS SHARP."  Both of the box sides state "MADE OF NO-SOL-VIT, THE MOST MODERN SUPER -GLASS.   It is interesting, these knives were sold in boxes which matched the color of the knife, so a green knife will found in a box with green lettering and so on. All the box inserts with instructions for use that we have seen list the distributor as The Stomar Manufacturing Corp. of Philadelphia, Pa.
